“Where is she?”

Dad arrived with the sunrise. I met him in the drive. He parked his truck crooked and was out of it the second the engine was off.

He looked thinner than I’d ever seen him. Macy warned me that he would, despite her best efforts. I’d already braced myself for that. The trials of the last few months had hit him almost as hard as anyone.

He’d been through a lot.

In part, he was the reason that we were still here at Morrow Manor instead of back at home.

Ma’s doctors had suggested that Dad keep his distance while her body recovered. I knew that must have nearly killed him, but dutifully, he’d stayed away. Their concern was that, despite the blood curse, any mating bond left between them would wake her before she was ready.

She’d fought hard against that curse. She’d won, and at great cost. If there was any hope that we might break it someday, Ma was its torchbearer. In the days ahead, we’d do anything we could to repair what had been lost.

But with Dad unable to stay by Ma’s side, someone had needed to step up to the plate. After all she’d done to try and keep Quincy away from us, we couldn’t leave her alone in some hospital bed alone.

Felicity was the one who’d suggested our current arrangement. My mate’s forgiveness truly knew no bounds.

“Your dad loves her most,” she’d acknowledged in the hospital room as we prepared to take our leave. “But he’s not the only one. If she can’t be around her mate while she heals, why not Clinton? Why not us?”

It was a generous us. I wouldn’t soon forget how my mother had hurt Felicity. Even to someone with the heart of a saint, Ma’s actions were pretty big to forgive in one go.

“Morrow Manor has the space for us all,” Felicity had pointed out. “It’s closer than Evergreen. We wouldn’t have to move her as far.”

Just like that, we’d all gotten a chance to rest and regroup. All of us except for Dad.

I hugged him tightly when he approached me. His arms were weak around me in return.

“I need to see her,” he rasped. “Please.”

“Come on.” I placed a hand on his back. The way I could feel the vertebrae of his spine though his shirt nearly broke my heart. “I’ll take you.”

In her childhood room with its big windows, Ma lay serenely in bed. Were it not for the dressing across her throat and around her head, you’d have thought she’d only lain down to take a nap.

“Marianne. I’m here. I came for you.” Dad ran to her bedside and knelt there. He draped his body over hers and reached out to hold her hand.

I held my breath as I waited to see if she would stir. After a few moments, a sob tore through Dad’s throat.

If seeing him had broken my heart, that sound of anguish turned the broken pieces to dust.

After all the time he’d stayed away to make sure he didn’t wake her, now that he was here, she remained unconscious.
